What to expect

Itinerary

Day 1
Johannesburg – Nairobi

Your adventure of a lifetime starts at O.R. Tambo International Airport, where you will meet the rest of the group at the Kenya Airways check-in counters before embarking on your flight to Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

Upon arrival, you will collect your bags and meet the tour’s expert local guides. The group will be transferred to the Fourpoints by Sheraton Hotel, where you will enjoy a welcome dinner together.

Kenya is a treasure trove map for wildlife and home to all the members of the Big Five: lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo.

The country’s landscape completely alters as you move across the country, from the deep ridges of the Great Rift Valley to the sweeping plains of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the vast Indian Ocean stretching across the coastline.

Day 2
Maasai Mara Game Reserve

We check out after breakfast and drive to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. On the route to our camp, we stop for lunch.

The Maasai Mara is truly a must-see for every safari traveller; it’s just one part of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem (or Greater Serengeti ecosystem) that stretches from the Mau Escarpment above Kenya’s Rift Valley to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

Here, more than 1.5 million wildebeest and 300 000 zebras migrate in an enormous loop between Kenya and Tanzania every year. Here, in Kenya, the famous scenes of wildebeest crossing rivers unfold, and we hope to witness one of these magnificent moments, but nature will determine our luck.

We continue to our camp, with a game drive en route. Who knows? We might just see some of the Big Five along the way.

Lunch is served on arrival. We settle in for our 3 night stay.

In the evening, the group will enjoy the warm campfire and listen to laughing hyenas, singing nightjar or even the roar of a lion. It’s during these “quiet” moments that you discover Kenya’s essence and beauty.

As the American author John Hemingway famously wrote, “If I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa.”

In the morning, your moments of magic will continue with game drives and safari adventures.

Day 3-4
Maasai Mara

We enjoy two full days in the Maasai Mara, with game drives and optional activities such as a Hot Air Balloon Safari. Flying high up in the skies above the Maasai Mara is the ultimate safari experience. If you would like to embark on such an adventure, Seagull Travel & Tours can pre-book it for you.

The Maasai Mara is perhaps the only region left in the world where visitors have the opportunity to see animals in the same super-abundance as they existed a century ago. The reserve stretches across 1 510 square kilometres and features a stunning kaleidoscope of wild and rugged landscapes. We explore the plains and rolling hills for a chance to spot elephant, black-maned lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, over 450 species of bird and diverse species of hoofed animals.

  • Optional Balloon Safari

Day 5
Lake Elementaita

After breakfast, the group departs for Lake Elementaita, a soda lake in the Great Rift Valley. The word Elementaita is derived from the Maasai word muteita, meaning the place of dust; this refers to the dryness and dustiness of the area, especially between January and March. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also home to flocks of dancing flamingos. Lake Elementaita offers the perfect photo opportunity to see the pink-feathered birds wading gracefully on their thin legs through the waters. The lake’s shores are grazed by zebra, gazelle, eland and warthog families.

Upon arrival at the five-star Lake Elementaita Serena Camp, we will check in and enjoy lunch. After some time to settle in, we head to the Soysambu Conservancy for a game drive, which includes a route around the lake.

The beautiful conservation is home to more than 450 bird species, which includes 28% of the world’s population of Lesser Flamingo. You might also see the endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe, named after the London zoologist Lionel Water Rothschild, who first described the subspecies in the early 1900s.

The group will enjoy dinner at the hotel, while listening to the symphony of crickets, hooting owls and jackals.

Day 6
Lake Nakuru National Park

You will enjoy breakfast before embarking on a drive to the Lake Nakuru National Park for an almost full day’s visit.

Situated on the Great Rift Valley floor, Lake Nakuru is surrounded by serene landscapes of grasslands, marsh, outcrops, rocky cliffs, and sedges. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to over 400 species of birds, including pelicans and pink flamingos that flock to feed on the teeming algae of its alkaline waters. The best place to view the flamingos is from the Baboon Cliff.

It is also the habitat of more than 100 black and white rhinos, which thrive in the surrounding national park – one of the largest collections of rhinos throughout Kenya. The park’s other frequent guests include the zebra, eland, waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck and buffalo. The abundance of prey attracts a variety of predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas.

The group will enjoy lunch at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge with views across the beautiful lake.

After an eventful day, we return to Lake Elementaita late in the afternoon to freshen up and enjoy a farewell dinner at the lodge.

FAQs

We are here to help

The tour leader collects a set amount from each member of a tour. This kitty is then used to tip the local tour guide and city guides, bus drivers, any other assistants, and restaurant staff. We believe in tipping for good service as a token of appreciation, especially as many workers in tourism rely on tips to supplement their income.

Although we cannot apply on your behalf, we are more than willing to give guidance and assistance with completing forms. We do this for many clients on a near-daily basis. It does, however, remain the responsibility of the client to ensure that they get the correct visa on time.

Remember that we limit the number of guests on our tours. This means more time at stops and sites. We definitely do not do groups of 30 pax, where guests are rushed from one site to the other. There is enough time to explore on your own.

We always suggest USD/Euro 50 to USD/Euro 100 per person per day. As we mostly include two meals per day on our tours, this will be enough for lunch/dinner, some snacks, and memento shopping. Should you want to buy larger items, we suggest taking along your credit card. Remember to advise the bank that you will be travelling.
